The goal of this article will be to help the reader understand some of the most common advantages that might be found through the use of the Saeco Vienna Plus machine. This type of machine is usually called a super automatic espresso brewing machine and it is not very different than the type of machine that is found in a coffee house. The fact that it can be easily used at home is the only real difference.

There is one very important feature to mention because it is exclusive to models that have been created by this particular manufacturer. This would be the pre-brewing technology that the machine utilizes. This simply means that that before the actual brewing begins in the brewing compartment, this machine fuses the beans with hot water right away to ensure maximum extraction.

The grinder on this particular model is also very important to mention here because it is what professionals will refer to as an adjustable style burr grinder. This simply means that this grinder was created to handle any type of bean that the user might consider throwing at it. There are many other machines that would rate much higher if they could handle some of the harder and larger beans.

A lot of users have been praising this device for the simple fact that it is very easy for them to clean after it has been used. Every major component that is utilized during the actual brewing process can be taken apart and easily cleaned without the use of harsh chemicals that would have to be rinsed away. All that is required to clean this machine is warm or hot water and a small amount of time.

This type of machine is not quite as large as a coffee house machine yet it is rather large for a kitchen appliance. This means that it is capable of offering a storage tank that can hold almost sixty ounces of water. When somebody considers the simple fact that espresso and coffee brewing does not require large amounts of water, this tank is quite impressive indeed.

A lot of the customer reviews on this device feature people that are complimenting the fact that this machine is so much simpler to use that a lot of others. A lot of other restaurant style machines feature a multitude of flashing screens and flashing buttons that are scattered all over the place. This machine has a group of buttons near each other and is simple to learn and master.

It is also very important to consider that while so many models do not offer a choice in color, this is the type of model that has grown in popularity so much that it offers the consumer to color schemes to choose from. There is the silver color scheme and there is also the graphite color scheme. This offers people a little bit of flexibility to choose a model that will best fit their kitchen.

By now, consumers should have a much better understanding of why the Saeco Vienna Plus coffee machine has been growing in popularity so very much. Families that want to enjoy large amounts of coffee shop quality product within the privacy of their homes are very likely to enjoy this option. The fact that it is easy to clean and use are also very highly in its favor.

When talking about opera, you just can’t miss mentioning the Vienna State Opera. Being one of the most famous operas nowadays, this is such a place, where you can enjoy one of the best performances. The opera’s stage offers you every day a new program, consisting of more than 50 operas, ballet works and much more adding up to having performances around 300 days every year.

The State Opera’s repertoire covers a huge number of plays from the entire world’s opera history. During the new season (2011/2012) a total of five new operas will be performed on the stage of the opera. In these magnificent plays you will be able to spot some of the big names in opera, such as Ramón Vargas, Elisabeth Kulman, Natalie Dessay, Michael Schade and much much more.

Many of the top performers of the world, stage designers and directors seek to please and avoid the critics of the expert Viennese audience with their art.

Great musicians were directors of the opera. One of them is the famous Herbert von Karajan (1956 – 1964). The opera’s building was established in the years between 1863 and 1869 on the Ringstraße, aiming to be one of the first elite buildings there.

There is another bizarre event, happening once per year: The Vienna Opera Ball, which transforms the prestigious stage of the State Opera into a huge dance floor. The Ball begins with over a hundred debutante couples which wear tails or long evening dresses.During the summer months you can enjoy the great performances not only on the stage of the opera, but also on the square just in front of the Opera House. There will be about 150 performances of ballet and opera productions that will be screened on the huge (50m2) display that is situated just in front of the Opera House. Therefore, you can enjoy all of these classical works for free. There is also the option of taking a tour to see what is happening backstage at the Opera House.

You can also visit the State Opera Museum that will be amusing for every opera lover and provides insight into the history of the Opera House. In this museum you can learn about the history of the Opera House that dates 140 years back and is filled with amazing events. You can take a look at a large number of photos, models of stage settings, costumes, programs and many interesting documents that will take you on a journey through time. There is also a permanent exhibition that begins with Franz Freiherr von Dingelstedt – the person who was first director of the famous Opera House – and finishes with facts about the famous Ioan Holender who was the person that took care of the Opera House for the longest period of time in history.

You can find out who was performing, singing and directing every play that has been staged in the Opera House in the last 50 years.

Vienna was a strong fortress, but by the end of August 1683, the city was in mortal danger of collapsing to the Turkish attack. Food and ammunition were inadequate, The Ottoman siege cut virtually every means of food supply into Vienna, and the garrison and civilian volunteers suffered extreme casualties. Fatigue became such a problem that Ernst Rüdiger Graf von Starhemberg ordered any soldier found asleep on watch to be shot. The siege by the Islamic Turks of the Christian city of Vienna in 1683 was a watershed incident in European history. Had the Turks been successful, there well might have been no Christian Europe to dominate the world stage for the next 300 years. Facing that magnitude of threat, European powers that were normally jealous and hostile to one another suppressed their mutual antagonisms to defeat the armies of Islam and their brutal Tartar Allies. Before he set out, Sobieski had sent a letter to Innocent XI, in which he wrote: “When the good of the Church and Christianity is concerned I shed my blood to the last drop, together with the whole kingdom. Since my kingdom and I are two bulwarks of Christianity”. Sobieski said that his purpose for going to Vienna was “to proceed to the Holy War, and with God’s help to give back the old freedom to besieged Vienna, and thereby help …

European coffee culture is often associated with Italy.

In fact, coffee was presented to Western Europe by Vienna, capital of Austria.

The Ottoman Empire had been laying siege to Vienna from time to time for over three hundred years. The Turks were eventually defeated once and for all in battle in 1683. That victory probably saved Western Europe from centuries of Ottoman domination – in any case, the Turkish Grand Vizier was made to leave in a precipitous hurry, and he left behind tents full of gold and Persian rugs and silverware and…piles of odd brown beans.

It didn’t take the canny Viennese long to realize that the coffee bean was the most valuable loot of the lot.

Georg Kolschitzky opened the first Viennese Coffee House in 1685. Kolschitzky was a Pole who, as spy and double agent, had been playing the Viennese and the Turks against each other for many years, and along the way had learned the true art of coffee making. The Viennese quickly took to drinking coffee and Kolschitzky went on to become an extremely wealthy man.

In this day and age the coffee house plays a defining role in Viennese ‘Gemuetlichkeit’ – a term which is almost impossible to translate, meaning a comfortable, relaxed, easy-going enjoyment of life. At the turn of the 20th century the Viennese coffee house was much more important – it was a home from home, a place where chess was played, business transacted, friends and critics could meet to discuss the latest scandal about Gustav Mahler, the controversial new Music Director of the Court Opera. People would settle into their regular seat and savour their coffee and read newspapers fixed on wooden frames.

It was an art, too, to know which kind of coffee to ask for. The Viennese were far too sophisticated to settle for simple black coffee or white coffee.

To begin with you had to decide between a glass or a cup – real connoisseurs insisted on a glass.

Schlagobers, or whipped cream, was served as a matter of course with your coffee unless you specifically ordered without, or preferred to take coffee with skin (referring to the thick skin of the unpasteurized and unskimmed milk of the day). But you couldn’t order a simple ‘coffee with skin’ – you had to specify the exact color: ‘black with skin’ or ‘dark with skin’ or ‘whiter with skin’.

White coffee, too, came in many shades and variants – a ‘cup of gold’ referred to a golden-colored brew, a ‘cup of brown’ was similar to the Italian cappuccino. For black coffee topped with a dollop of whipped cream you ordered an ‘Einspaenner’ (a single horse drawn carriage – ‘Fiaker’ to the Viennese). If you wanted to be really decadent a ‘Zweispaenner’ came with an extra helping of cream.

Besides coffee, Vienna has some of the best natural tap water to be found anywhere – ice cold and delicious, carried via aqueduct from the Alps sixty miles distant – and you invariably received a small glass of water to refresh your mouth after enjoying your coffee.

For many Viennese the coffee house was a real way of life. It was possible to spend long hours there very cheaply – and unlike today there was no pressure to leave as soon as your coffee was finished. If the ‘Ober’ (waiter) wiped the table next to yours it was because it needed wiping, not as a hint for you to leave. You could stay as long as you liked perusing the newspapers, and the waiter would discretely replace your glass of water from time to time. The famous poet Peter Altenberg had no postal address at all other than his coffee house.

At the conference on co-existence, held from the 4th to 6th of April in Vienna, Jeremy Sweet, environmental consultant and Vice-President of the GMO panel of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) called for a clear regulation of the threshold values for permissible contamination of conventional seeds with GMOs. It is absolutely necessary to have the same threshold values EU-wide, which should be scientifically based.

The lower the threshold values would be laid down the higher would be the costs for the European seeds producers. With low values of 0.1 to 0.3 % very extensive separation procedures or even special zones for the seed production would be required. This could result in higher costs for the farmers. This again would weaken internationally the terms of the competition of the EU-agricultural production.

Further, said Sweet, the question of necessary safety distances between fields with conventional and with GM-seeds has to be settled. Most of the studies, which have been conducted in Spain, Germany, France and Great Britain, came to the conclusion, that co-existence is quite possible, if suitable safety distances will be kept.

Thereby the extent of the necessary distance would be dependent on the defined threshold value; also for the establishing of the suitable distance the plant type concerned, the time of bloom as well as different climatic and ecological conditions are playing important roles. This means, that in determining and applying co-existence measures it is necessary to take into account the local conditions. In the end the mentioned factors altogether are deciding about the possible GM-purity of the seeds. Also important would be measures for the cleaning of the used farm implements as well as measures for the separation of conventional and GM-seeds in the storage and at the transportation, so that it will not come to a later contamination.

In order to reach an effective and acceptable co-existence, further sensible regulations for the labeling of GM-products as well as measures for the traceability and for a risk management are required. For that the existing methods for the proof of GMOs in products should be internationally standardized and the different legal systems of the individual EU-countries should be harmonized.

Jeremy Sweet gives a clear and concise description of the problems and the issues being up for decision within the EU.

Now that the ball season in Vienna is in full swing, many people who have never been to this event might be interested to go this year. But wait! Before you go there, it might be worth learning about the proper etiquette at this formal event. Knowing the right ways to behave will ensure that you won’t get embarrassed and out of place there. Dancing skills are a must when attending. Don’t worry, though, if you don’t know how to dance because dance lessons are provided for free. Normally, six free dance lessons are offered before the ball takes place including one session in the afternoon of the date of the ball itself. The dances covered include the Viennese Waltz, Grand March, Fledermaus Quadrille, polka and the gallop. Anybody interested to learn how to dance and even those who cannot make it to the ball can attend the session. Nothing to worry if you have two left feet because it’s easy to learn the ball dances. In addition, no partner is necessary because dance partners are rotated during the dance lessons. During the ball itself, it’s proper etiquette for men to ask women with no escorts to dance. Couples are also encouraged to dance with other people. For the women, keep in mind that when a man asks you to dance, it does not necessarily mean that he is already in love with you or is interested in you. When a couple is dancing, it’s unethical for other men to cut in and ask the lady to dance. Etiquette calls for men to let a couple finish their dance first before inviting the lady to dance with him. Women are also allowed to decline a man’s invitation to dance. But this is only if she is tired or has already committed to dance to another man. She you can just assure the gentleman to dance with him at a later time.
